October is a time to sip cider, enjoy fresh donuts, and search for the perfect pumpkin to carve into a Jack-o-lantern. For millions of Americans it is also time make or purchase Halloween costumes. Many Halloween traditions originated as part of an ancient Gaelic festival celebrated at the end of October, midway between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice. As the days got shorter communities held festivals that included bonfires, costumes, and feasts. To combat the pagan nature of these rituals, Pope Gregory designated November 1 as All Saints Day, and October 31 became known as All Hallows’ Eve.
In the last 25 years Halloween has become a major commercial event in the United States. The National Retail Federation estimates that this year Americans will spend $7.4 billion on candy, decorations, cards, and costumes– including a whopping $350 million for their pets’ costumes!
At the Troy Historic Village all are invited to a family-friendly Trick or Treat event on October 24 from 12:30- 3:30 pm. This year the Village will feature larger-than-life toys and games to play with and plenty of candy, treats, and crafts in each of the historic buildings. Enter under our giant Radio Flyer Wagon, play tic-tac-toe on a life size game board, or pin-the-tail on Cheddar the Mouse. Stack giant blocks and build a kid-sized log cabin with pool-noodle Lincoln Logs.
Children will also make a take-home craft and receive mini-pumpkins from members of the Troy Garden Club. Everyone can enjoy a bit of cider or Timbits and Coffee, courtesy of Tim Horton’s– Troy. Treats are provided by Meijer, Goldfish Swim School, CoolYo Frozen Yogurt and Art of Smiles. Families can also enter to win an Ultimate Trick or Treat Bag that includes prizes from Planet Rock, the Robot Garage, Goldfish Swim School, Classic Lanes, Rainforest Café and more. A special presentation will be held at 2 pm to award the Scarecrow Row contest winners. Voting is open until October 22. Visit www.troyhistoricvillage.org/scarecrow-row to vote. We hope to see everyone on October 24th!

To commemorate the City of Troy’s 60th Anniversary in 2015, we will publish a different story each day that highlights a person, discovery, or event that occurred locally, regionally, nationally, or even globally between 1955 and 2015 and that helped shape our lives and our community. We will try to post stories on important anniversary dates, but we also realize that dates are less critical than content and context. We will include the facts related to controversial stories, allowing our readers to form their own opinions. We invite you to read and comment on the stories. Your suggestions for topics are also welcome and can be posted on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TroyHistoricVillage. You can also email stories or ideas to the 365 Story Editor at ed@thvmail.org.
